Ultrasound Ireland

From GP referral to result, in one place.

Ultrasound Ireland runs pregnancy, medical and fertility scans at three clinics in Dublin, with most patients sent by their GP. Reception, sonographers and radiologists needed one system to take a referral from the GP's letter to a result back on the GP's desk, and patients wanted to follow it too. I designed the UX/UI of the staff web app and the patient result page.

The challenge

A scan isn't done until the GP has the result.

Every scan starts with a GP's letter and ends with a report back on that GP's desk. In between, the patient is booked at one of three clinics, scanned, and reported on by a radiologist. Each step is done by a different person, and each one can stall.

The approach

One record, from letter to result.

I designed the app around the referral: one record that follows the patient through every step, shows who has it, and makes the next step obvious.

  1. 01

    Every referral tells its story.

A row of steps shows where it is, from referred to result sent. Documents, notes and every event sit on the same page, so anyone can pick it up.

  2. 02

A colour for each kind of scan.

Pregnancy, medical, 3D / 4D baby and fertility scans each have their own colour, used on tiles, tags and charts. The day's work reads at a glance.

  3. 03

    Problems come to you.

Results past the 48-hour target, bounced emails and letters that don't match a patient appear where staff already look, with the fix one click away.

REFERRALS

From letter to booked scan.

A new email from Slievemore Clinic doesn't match a patient yet. Niamh opens it with the attached letter, creates the referral and books the scan in one step. Referrals that arrive by phone are added from the list.

RESULTS

When a result email bounces.

Siobhán Kelly's anomaly scan report was signed on Tuesday, but two emails to her GP's practice bounced. The referral turns red past the 48-hour target. Niamh resends it to the address the practice confirmed and saves it for next time.

REPORTS

Write the report, send the letter.

Dr Ruth O'Brien reports from a template for each scan type. The cover letter to the GP fills itself in as she writes, and the report list shows what is still a draft, signed or sent.

Two Ultrasound Ireland screens: the reports list with draft, signed and sent badges, and a follicle tracking report for Emma Doyle with findings lines next to a live preview of the cover letter to her GP

PATIENTS

Patients follow their own result.

Each patient gets a tracking code by text. The result page shows every step in plain words, from the scan to the report reaching their GP, on any phone or computer.

Design language

Calm, clinical and easy to scan.

A white, flat interface keeps the focus on patients and dates. Ultrasound Ireland's navy is saved for the main action on each page. Four scan-type colours and one set of status badges, each with its own icon, let staff read a list without reading every word. Manrope, the brand's typeface, keeps long tables easy on the eye.

Designed so no result gets lost.

I designed the UX/UI of Ultrasound Ireland's staff web app and patient result page: the dashboard, referrals, patients, portals, doctors, reports, inbox and settings. Each page is laid out to show where a referral is and what needs doing next.
